The Toxic Right Wing

Bringing the Taliban to the GOP

You know the meme. The one of Homer Simpson slowly disappearing into the bushes and then sometimes coming out as something different? That is today’s GOP, the Mitt Romney wing of the party is quickly disappearing with the Toxic GOP coming out as its replacement.

Homer in the Bushes. Meme Arsenal.

If we looked at the people in the incestuous GOP family tree, beginning with 2016, we have Trump at the top, of course. From him, has spawned the toxic DeSantis, Greene, Boebert, Gaetz, Crawford, Hawley, and more. Luckily, many MAGA candidates lose in elections, a hopeful trend. This tree also includes their mouthpieces like Sean Hannity, Lisa Kennedy, and Candace Owens. These people treat the truth like an exterminator treats cockroaches. And it’s just getting worse. Many of the GOP candidates for this November still repeat the lies of a stolen election.

But we also have toxic events, such as January 6, Kennedy v. Bremerton, CPAC, and the fading Trump rallies. I don’t know if these are real interviews, but you can watch @thegoodliars on TikTok and watch some of the stupidest people becoming part of this toxic right. There are actually people there who think Biden is dead with actors playing him as president.

Let’s not forget the movements, either. Candidates like Glen Youngkin and others are running and winning elections by fighting against Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools or whole states who are willing to raise taxes on homeowners all to prevent teachers from saying, “gay.” Many states are passing laws that will make it harder to teach in public schools, get abortions, or seek help as a trans person. MAGA churches and Christian Nationalism are growing in popularity and more and more evangelicals are fusing church and state like the Taliban.

I don’t want to paint those who consider themselves as conservative with the broad brush of the toxic right. But I don’t see them trying to win back their party.

In prior articles, I’ve talked about the need for a more middle approach to politics. But right now, as this cartoon below suggests, the current Left is in the middle of the political spectrum where it seeks a basic quality of life. And now, with the leak of Alito’s opinion toward overturning Roe v. Wade, it’s more imperative than ever for voters to overwhelm the toxic right on Election Day, 2022.
